Thomas and Ruth Sergeant

Thomas Sergeant was born about 1661 (possibly in Maine or England), but the identity of his parents is unknown. His death record in 1711 lists his age as “abt 50.” Thomas married Ruth Johnson about 1689 based on the birth of their first known child.

The first record of Thomas is in 1683, where Thomas Sergeant and his father-in-law, Francis Johnson, are listed on a Petition from the Inhabitants of Pemaquid, Maine1. On September 13, 1686, Thomas is granted 100 acres in the Pemaquid area per the Dongan Patent. Thomas’ father-in-law and brother-in-law, Thomas Warden, were also granted land there on the same day. On October 14, 1687, the tax roll lists “ffrancis Johnsone, Thomas Serjeant and Thomas Warden.” Thomas Sergeant was taxed for land, two cows, a heifer and a colt.
1 (Pemaquid, as it was known up until about 1765, is now Bristol, Lincoln, Maine.)

Thomas and Ruth had five children in Scituate, Plymouth, Massachusetts, starting in 1690. In the town records of Scituate on May 11, 1697, there is a list of people whose horses were allowed to go on unfenced lands, and Thomas has one bay mare. By 1705, Thomas and Ruth had moved to Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts, where their last two sons were born. No other records have been found for Thomas, until his death on April 11, 1711, in Boston, at about age 50, and it is not known where he is buried.

Note: Through Y-DNA testing, it has been confirmed that the descendants of our Sergeant family are a close match to the descendants of Louis-Philippe Langlais who was born about 1688 in New England and died in 1733 in Canada.  He is believed to have been abducted as a child by the Indians in the Maine area and taken to Canada around 1689.  So, Louis-Philippe was born a Sergeant, but his name was changed, probably because he was taken when too young to remember his full name.  Thomas Sergeant (1661-1711) was in Maine around 1689.  It is not known if Louis-Philippe could possibly be a son of Thomas and Ruth, or maybe he descends from an earlier generation of our Sergeants. One thing is clear: the Y-DNA proves that these two families are closely related during this time period.

Ruth Johnson was born in August 1664 in Marblehead, Essex, Massachusetts. Her father was Lt. Francis Johnson Jr. (1644-1717), and she had one known sister, Mary Johnson, who married Thomas Warden. There is a deed in Essex County, Massachusetts, in 1666 that lists Francis’ wife as Elizabeth, but more research is needed to confirm if she is the mother of Ruth and Mary.

On July 21, 1702, in Scituate, “Ruth Seargant Jr” gave an oath regarding a paternity case. Ruth is believed to have been a midwife, so maybe that is why she had to testify. After Thomas died, Ruth married John Barry on May 13, 1713, in Boston. On March 4, 1719, Ruth Barry sold property on behalf of her husband, John Barry (Tanner), and that deed also lists her father and her eldest son, William. In a “Deed of Gift” on April 18, 1719, John Barry gave his estate to his wife Ruth, and assigned William Sergeant to be administrator on her behalf. John died on May 17, 1720, in Boston, and apparently did not have any kids. There are several court cases between John’s nephew, James Barry (also a Tanner) and Ruth Barry regarding her dower, and on October 4, 1720, she was granted her 1/3 part of her husband’s estate.

On April 3, 1733, there is another court case between James Barry (Tanner) and Ruth Barnaby (Widow.) We believe she is the same Ruth Barry, although no records have been found to show that she married someone named Barnaby.

On September 6, 1764, in Boston, there is a curious deposition given by Ruth Barnaby, aged 100 years old. She was deposed about her time in the Pemaquid area with her father when she was a young girl. She said they lived there many years until they were driven off by the Indians. Based on the names she remembered, and other records that also list these families with either the Sergeants or the Johnsons, we believe that this woman was the same Ruth (Johnson) Sergeant Barry. The deposition ended with the Justices claiming that Ruth was of “sound memory & understanding.”

Ruth Barnaby died on February 12, 1765, in Boston. Her obituary said she had reached her 100th year the prior August, and that she had been a midwife for 40 years. Her burial was listed in the Christ Church (Old North) records on February 15, 1765; however, it is not known where she is buried.

Note: Thomas and Ruth’s eldest son, William, married Ruth Barnaby, who married Thomas Doty after her first husband died, and then Ruth Doty died in 1757. No connection has been found between that Barnaby family and “Ruth Barnaby” in the 1764 deposition.

Children of Thomas Sergeant and Ruth Johnson:

Note: no baptism records have been found for any of these children, so it is not known what churches they may have attended.

  1. Elizabeth Sergeant was born on May 6, 1690, in Scituate, Plymouth, Massachusetts. No other records have been found for her.
  2. Thomas Sergeant was born on September 6, 1692, in Scituate. No other records have been found for him, but his parents named another son Thomas in 1707, so he likely died by then.
  3. William Sergeant was born on April 7, 1696, in Scituate. In 1719, his mother, Ruth, is listed in two deeds in Boston, and William is also named – first as a cooper and later as a mariner. William married Ruth Barnaby (daughter of Stephen Barnaby and Ruth Morton) on May 23, 1720, in Truro, Barnstable, Massachusetts, and they had three children. William served as treasurer of Provincetown, Barnstable County, from 1726 to 1728. In April 1728, William is listed as the administrator of his wife’s father’s estate. But then, William died on September 17, 1728, in Boston at the age of 32. His widow then married Col. Thomas Doty, and she died on October 11, 1757, in Plymouth, Massachusetts.
  4. Thaddeus Sergeant was born on August 25, 1700, in Scituate. He was deposed at age 20 in Marblehead, Essex, Massachusetts about his time at Muscongus, Maine, which is near Pemaquid. On July 26, 1722, Thaddeus married Susanna Merret at King’s Chapel in Boston; there are no records of any children. The last record for Thaddeus is when he sued for wages in 1723 regarding a fishing trip at Muscongus. No death record has been found for him, but Susanna Sergeant remarried in 1730; however, no other records have been found for her.
  5. Mary Sergeant was born on January 28, 1703, in Scituate. There is a possible marriage for her, but more research is needed.
  6. Francis Sergeant was born on July 17, 1705, in Boston. He died on October 12, 1724, at age 19, and his tombstone at the Granary Burying Ground in Boston lists his last name as “Shargent,” son of Thomas and Ruth.
  7. Thomas Sergeant was born on February 25, 1707, in Boston, and that is where he married Elizabeth Tompson on July 23, 1728. They had five children and were married 41 years until Elizabeth’s death on May 19, 1770. Thomas married Frances (Ellsworth) Look on August 13, 1770. Thomas died on December 31, 1788, in Boston at the age of 81. It is not known where he is buried. Frances died in February 1795 at the age of 85.
